What is EN 45545-2?
EN 45545-2 is the European railway fire safety standard specifying requirements for materials used in rail vehicles. The standard defines three hazard levels (HL1, HL2, HL3) based on vehicle design and operating scenario, with HL3 being the most stringent for underground vehicles and enclosed spaces.
For rubber components, EN 45545-2 testing includes:
- Heat release (ISO 5659-2): Optical smoke density and toxicity of combustion gases
- Spread of flame (ISO 5658-2): Critical heat flux at flame out
- Toxic gas emission (EN ISO 19702): Analysis of combustion gases
US Rail Projects: US transit agencies increasingly reference EN 45545-2 in procurement specifications as an internationally recognized benchmark. Our EN 45545-2 HL3 certified compounds are accepted as equivalent to NFPA 130 material documentation requirements in many US transit procurement programs.
HL2 Compliant Rubber Components
All standard BOMAG cab mount and vibration damper compounds are available in EN 45545-2 HL2 compliant formulations. HL2 is suitable for most passenger railway applications and many US transit procurement requirements. Request the EN 45545-2 option when ordering 3115 2472 00, 3128 0458 18, and related parts.
HL3 Compliant Rubber Components
For the most stringent applications — underground metro, tunnel operations, closed-deck ferry vehicles — our HL3 compound uses a halogen-free flame retardant system that meets the strictest EN 45545-2 requirements. Available for all cab mount, vibration damper, and rubber isolation element product lines.
